The boys have done it!!!! Congratulations to you two. Its an amazing achievement and words cannot describe how proud we are of you. Its an astonishing effort which has paid off no end. It must be like being in their own epiphany right now. The views are apparently out of this world as they put it and after taking it all in and taking lots of group shots it was time to descend again back to base camp of Island Peak. They will be slowly now be heading down back towards Namche Bazaar.

WELL DONE BOYS!!!!!!! CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU BOTH!!! The aim was to get to Everest base Camp by this afternoon or by tomorrow but despite it being bitterly cold, not being able to eat very much and suffering a little from the altitude, they kept their spirits going and with their determination and stubbornness they managed to get to base camp a day earlier!!!

The altitude at base camp is 5436 metres. In their words, it is barren, desolate and they are feeling the altitude now.

Tomorrow, on Sunday the 31st of October they will be heading to Kala Pathar which is 5545 metres. Then from here, it is 3 days walk to the their ultimate goal - ISLAND PEAK or Imja Tse at 6189 metres in height. This is by no means an easy task but a daunting one but we are all rooting for them and are sure they will give it their all and conquer the big one.

They are ecstatic of what they have achieved so far and had a group photo with their team and am sure are just trying to take everything in and of course rest as much as possible before their next trekking phase.

Well done boys and hang in there!!!!!!

Namche Bazaar, Tengbouche, Pferiche

The boys acclimatised at Namche Bazaar for two days enjoying the markets and visiting the local monasteries and just resting as much possible here.

Beyond Namche, the serious altitude begins as they have slowly progressed towards Everest Base Camp. The mountain scenery along the way is just awe inspiring with
many of the worlds highest peaks in full view such as Everest itself and Lhotse.

They then treked to the village of Khumjung which is situated near Mount Khumbila (3970 metres) from sea level. The village is north of Namche Bazaar and is another check point where the boys have passed and acclimatised towards their next trek. The village still has modern communications such as landlines and internet so we can still communicate daily with them even though it might not be as easy to get a line clear now.

They are now past this point and went from Tengbouche towards Pferishe-their next acclimatisation stop. The altitude here is 4270 metres. It sits quietly under the majestic Ama Dablam. The temperature where they are now is -10C at night and they seem to be not suffering from any altitude sickness.

Pferishe is another important stop as the Nepalese Rescue Association is located here. It is a
medical station manned (during the trekking season) by volunteer qualified Doctors. Through
experience, if you are going to suffer from altitude sickness, symptoms will begin to surface here.
Scott and Darren's guide will encourage them to do a small acclimatisation walk to get their bodies used to the higher level of altitude here.

From here it is just a 2 - 3 day trek before they reach Everest Base Camp by which time they will have met the enormous Khumbu glacier as they trek up the front of it.

I will update you guys soon.

Many thanks.

Michelle

Lukla to Namche Bazaar

Scott and Darren arrived in Lukla late Friday the 22nd of october where they commenced their trek towards Everest Base Camp. They trekked from Lukla to Monjo on the 23rd of October and had Yak steak for dinner!!!

They then proceeded to trek to Namche Bazaar which was a much hardous trek. The altitude here is 3416 metres (11,286 ft) with breathtaking views from their moutain lodge.

Namche Bazaar for your information is a village in the Solukhumbu District in the Sagarmatha zone of north-eastern Nepal. it is located within the Khumbu area populating the sides of a hill. Namche is the main trading area of the Khumbu region with many Nepalese officials including a policeman, a post office and even a bank!! So, they are not as yet in the wilderness. Once they arrived they rested then spent the rest of the afternoon walking around the village's markets and visiting the monasteries. The boys both appear to be feeling well.

Today the boys were heading to a small climatisation climb to get used to the altitude in the region and afterwards they will rest this afternoon. The food is so-so but they appear to be feeling well and have not been affected as yet by the altitude here.
Will update you soon as I get information from Scott of where they are. Follow the links so you can track their progress and also in facebook where they are uploading pictures of their journey as they go along.

Bella Italia Leaving Party

Thank you for all of you that attended the charity leaving dinner on Monday the 18th of October at Bella italia, Sixfields, Nortampton. And not forgetting the amazing entertainment from my friend Carol "Caz" who put on a great performance and wowed everyone with her voice. At the end of the night we managed to raise £398.37 and considering it was a Monday night, I think this figure exceeded everyone's expectations.

We are well on our way to meet our £3000 target and no doubt will surpass this by the time the boys get back on the 10th November.

The boys (Darren and Scott) left on Wednesday the 20th of October for Delhi, then got a connecting flight to Kathmandu where they stayed for two nights then headed out to Lukla on Friday the 22nd where their trek began. The views are amazing and the boys sampled some local Nepalese delights including Yak steak for dinner and not forgetting the authentic Everest beer which is very good apparently.

Will keep you updated on the boys progress.

Many thanks

Michelle

Dinner Evening at Bella Italia

Join us at our leaving party on Monday the 18th of September at Bella Italia at Sixfields in Northampton.

The party starts at 6.30pm and goes on till around 11pm. Matt is used to plenty of physical endurance work and promises to put us through our paces. With only 6 weeks until the mountain trail challenge, we need every bit of help and motivation. Then, 4 weeks later its the big one for Cancer Research UK in the Everest region.

Friday evening, we drive up to a pub alongside a road in the mid of the black mountains. It's 9pm and on the back of a hard working week- Daz and I are feeling a little apprehensive for the trek ahead of us. After meeting up with Matt, we sample a pint of the local tipple whilst pawing over the maps agreeing the route.

The rain has held off on the journey up from Northampton but now threatens to open up- perhaps starting as it means to carry on. We finish of our pints and head back to the cars to pick up the rucksacks and head off to walk to our first rendezvous point. The packs are pretty heavy as we have food, drink and camping kit for 2 days unsupported in the mountains.

"You don't want to be messing around up there in the mist"

As we leave the pub, the landlord offers us some words of caution and shows us some photos of some steep ledges and escarpments. "You don't want to be messing around up there in the mist", he says. "How are you going to walk up there in the dark?" he asks, as if probing our credentials. Matt pipes up; "Oh, we'll be OK. We'll take it steady, one foot in front of the other. Find a suitable basha spot and camp up for the night". Seemingly convinced, the landlord offers his farewells and we depart.

First camp was approximately 4km away. We headed up past the old caving club, around the quarry and up towards the tree line. The rain had now started to fly at us along with an increasingly determined wind. Stopping behind a fallen stone wall, we put on our waterproofs and take a checkpoint on the map. We've taken a wrong turn at that last gate, not a problem, just need to track back and pick up the trail again. We decide to pick up the pace a little and begin jogging on the flatter pathways.

After a few hours, and dodging several pot-hole entrances, we arrive at our first RV- a small clearing in a wooded area. We are south west of Fan Fawr and some distance from Story Arms- our main objective for the Saturday walk.

We set about raising camp, treading down the boggy grass, unrolling our sleeping mats and putting up our protective covers. Bivvy bags and sleeping bags make up our outdoor hotel luxuries! The rain begins to hold off- its wet in camp, best just to get used to it. We sit down on our packs and enjoy a beer- thanks to Daz and Matt for smuggling these through! Just what was needed before getting our heads down. It's now 1 am- we are up early to head out for the big one on Saturday.

Saturday AM to follow...

Everest Training -Brecon Beacons Part 2

Saturday Am.

We wake up pretty much about the same time as the sun and forest wild life rise. A fairly good nights sleep- all things considered. Matt and I were out like lights and had good sleeps. Daz on the other hand spent much of the night slipping down a slope in his sleeping bag and rolling over between some hidden rocks. Not quite the Hilton!

We get our personal admin in order and begin to pack down the camp. Today, everything is wet. I decide that wet is normal and dry is a bonus/ luxury. This is a good option as trousers, boots and feet were far from dry as we trudged through marshy soggy ground.

We decide that we'll march on a few miles before breakfast- perhaps a mistake as the route ahead is big land, steep inclines and descents with heavy going under foot. We will need the energy for this- well I certainly will!

Our first objective is to head to the tree line to the south west of fan fawr. From here we can contour around past the reservoir and head up to the saddle of fan fawr. Its a longer route but does help to avoid some of the steepest ascents.

We decide that we'll all take our own routes on this leg, at our own pace. Matt heads off on the high pass, bearing around the side of the Fawr and picking up a trail. Daz heads closer down nearer to the resevoir and then takes a sharper descent route. I head pretty much between the two trying to pick up good trails and ground where possible.

We decide to run a little on the down hills, just passing the cattle grid, I manage to turn an ankle. Quick sharp pain, nothing serious but I could feel it. Time to get the paracetemols and Ibruprofen out! That should sort it out for a few hours.

At this stage, my thoughts begin to turn to how much physical preparation we have done already for Island Peak (imja tse). Is it enough? Should we be doing more, different training etc. A steep hill shakes me back to the situation as a begin to feel the thigh burn. I know we need to do more physical work, but how can we fit it all in around our demanding jobs and family lives? A dilema, one we discuss as a group on the return leg.

This leg would beva good chance to practice our own navigation skills. Practicing feature navigation we mentally build a picture of the terrain and tick off passed features such as streams and escarpments. This helps with getting a good feeling for where you are in the landscpe and linking this back to the map.

Matt's experience, prep and fitness pays off, he sets a blistering pace and soon dissapears over the ridges and out of sight. I can see Daz begining a steep ascent of the side of Fan Fawr. I must be at least 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile to his left and need to turn west soon to get on the right bearing to pass through the saddle and head towards Storey Arms. My trail appears fairly well trodden so I think i'll make up the distance and catch Daz up as his route looks heavier under foot and perhaps slower. True enough, Daz and I converge on the hill overlooking Storey Arms. Here we stick together, deciding to run in the last down hill down to the Car park. Concentration is needed here, one foot in the wrong place with these heavy packs on our backs could mean a painful injury and a cancelled trip!

In the car park- a much needed cup of tea was waiting. Matt, arriving ahead of Daz and I was catching up with his rest and was chilling on his unrolled sleep mat.

Matt offers us some yoda-like advice on running which lightend the mood..."running is like walking, only faster". Wise words indeed - surety under foot is improving but I think Daz and I need to run more up and down hills!
Return leg to follow....

Everest Base Camp & Island Peak Challenge 2010

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_qta418QRrf4/S8uFftNFu9I/AAAAAAAAABQ/3el7wNcR_Cs/s320/EverestBaseCamp-746690.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5461605752873794514" />

On October 20th Scott Bushell and Darren Nolan will board a plane headed to Kathmandu in Nepal. From here they will begin a 17-day trek to Everest Base Camp culminating with an attempt at ascending a glacier peak known locally as Imja Tse (Island peak). Island Peak is towering 6,189 meters (20,035 ft) and poses a formidable challenge at high altitude.

Long Trek

The initial trek through the Himalayas will last for roughly 8 or 9 days arriving at Everest Base Camp to acclimatise at an altitude of 5,360 metres (17,590 ft). From here on, altitude sickness can become a problem. With nausea not uncommon, appetites can reduce making the challenge much more demanding.

Freezing Temperatures

From Base Camp, where temperatures will regularly drop to -15 degrees Celsius a further 3 or 4 days remain until they reach the high camp of Imja Tse. At this height and with these temperatures the chalenges enters another dimension and climbers need to dig deeper.

The Final Push

As dawn breaks, Darren and Scott will begin their summit ascent using crampons, harnesses and ice axes as they move onto the hard packed snow wall that leads onto the narrow ridge. The lack of oxygen, due to the thin atmosphere, doesn’t help with speedy progress!

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 246px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_qta418QRrf4/S8uFsLG_IXI/AAAAAAAAABY/EXk2nAxPiV4/s320/island+peak+summit.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5461605967059689842" />

The final push is a further 70 degree steep ascent to the summit and a chance for reflection and celebration.

This impressive expedition is being undertaken to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

Donations appreciated via www.justgiving.com/islandpeak

Thanks,

Scott & Darren

islandpeak@skbpm.com
